Angelic Apple Pie
This is why a Diablo is not a toasted sandwich! The Diablo maker can be used to make a perfect personal-sized apple pie. Either make your own shortcrust pastry or buy the pre-prepared sheets. First be sure to oil the inside of the Diablo maker with vegetable oil. Line each side of the maker with a piece of shortcrust pastry and press into the lining.
Heap the pie filling onto one side of the Diablo. You can used pre-prepared, canned pie filling or create a great home-made taste with stewed apples, brown sugar, sultanas and cinnamon. Either way, be sure to fill the Diablo.
About four tablespoons of filling should do the trick.
Close the Diablo maker and trim the excess pastry from the edges. This can be re-rolled and used again. Cook on a low heat for two and a half minutes each side then turning frequently until the pie is golden brown and ready for eating. Turn it onto a plate, dust with a little sugar and serve hot with a portion of ice-cream. Now that’s angelic!
The Tempter’s Turnover Treat
As a variation on a theme, try a turnover. Make as for the Angelic Apple Pie above, but use Filo pastry instead of shortcrust and split it so that only three very, very thin sheets are used for each side of the Diablo. Cherry pie filling makes a great turnover treat.
The Prince of Dark Chocolate
• ½ banana
• 2 tablespoons of thick, dark chocolate spread with or without the nut flavour
• 1 teaspoon icing sugar
• 2 slices thin white bread.
Chop the banana and mix into the chocolate spread. Spoon between two slices of bread and cook for a minute and a half each side over a low heat. Turn out the Diablo and dust with icing sugar. Amazing.
Fiery French Toast
• 1 egg • ½ cup milk
• 1 tablespoon flour
• 1 teaspoon caster sugar
• 3 tablespoons of strawberry jam
• 2 slices of thick, white bread
Beat the egg milk and flour together and pass though a strainer so it’s deliciously smooth. Dip the bread into the egg batter ensuring you coat it thoroughly. Place one piece of bread inside the Diablo maker, spoon the jam on top and then add the other slice of eggy bread. Cook for a minute and a half each side on a high heat. Sprinkle with caster sugar to serve and don’t eat any more sugar for another
week!
Lucifer’s Luscious Peaches
There’s no limit to the variety of ingredients that can be put together to make a great tasting Diablo. For example:
• 1 half of a peach (canned is fine)
• 1 large marshmallow
• 1 teaspoon of icing sugar
• 1 teaspoon soft brown sugar
Slice a peach in half and remove the stone from the middle. Fill the peach hollow with the marshmallow and add the brown sugar. Put a slice of peach on top as a cap. Cook both sides for just under a minute. This one is perfect cooked on a barbeque on a Summer’s eve. |
